The Cholmondeley Ladies. 15th June, 2021

This painting depicts two young women sitting on a bed, neatly dressed, each holding a baby. They are traditionally said to be sisters, although the different colored eyes of the woman and the child indicate that they are not identical twins. And the baby was wrapped in a red baptismal robe. This picture is painted with oil paint on wooden boards. The panel consists of four horizontal wooden boards, which are connected by glue at the butt joints.

When I saw this work for the first time, my first feeling was interesting, because I have never seen any oil paintings where there are two identical people in the same painting, and this kind of creative way shows Most of them are still in photography. But after careful observation, I found that the faces of these two women, the necklace they were wearing, and the face of the baby were quite different from each other. So, I thought about the demeanor. The woman on the left side of the painting, although the posture is very similar to the woman on the right. But in terms of expression, the former doesn't know whether it is because of the color of the pupils or something else. It gives me a very indifferent feeling. It feels like the queen in Snow White, while the latter gives me a gentle and kind feeling relatively.

Secondly, in terms of the composition structure, if you don't look at the details, this painting is a duplicate of the two paintings together, but when you look carefully, you can still clearly feel the character of the characters expressed. This has inspired me that this structure may be used in the structure of my subsequent works.
